Building a well-rounded cyber team includes bringing together diverse minds, backgrounds, and skillsets. Yet many stakeholders, from job seekers to recruiters and hiring officers, still inherently view security as a technical problem, requiring computer science degrees or other specialized training for success. Kontoor Brands’ CISO John Scrimsher sees non-technical folks as a force-multiplier and understands the value of hiring those who think about traditional cyber challenges differently – from approaching social engineering from a societal vantage point to storytelling through data. As a former magician himself, he shares personal experience and brings in Aaron Beuhring, senior director of cyber defense, to discuss how they’ve approached this challenge, where they’ve had successes in applying non-traditional skillsets to cyber roles, and proactive methods for recruiting applicants from diverse backgrounds to build passionate and results-driven team members.
